ST. PAUL ISLAND, ALASKA
2-6 June 2008
Day Agenda
1
We'll fly out of Anchorage and arrive at St. Paul to begin our Pribilof adventure. The birding often begins immediately upon leaving the airport. It's not unusual to see Red-legged Kittiwakes shortly after arrival. After dinner, we'll head out for more seabirds and seals.

Eyebrowed Thrush is one of several vagrant passerines that you may see on St. Paul.

2-4
Our daily schedule will depend somewhat upon the weather and what vagrants have been reported, but we will certainly stop at several of the seabird nesting cliffs. You'll want to bring a camera, as we'll be at very close range to murres, puffins, auklets, and perhaps a few other species on their nests. We'll search various locations for Asian vagrants. They could turn up anywhere – around wetlands, in town, or even in a quarry that's on the island. These migrants are scarce – we may encounter only a few during our stay – but the species that we might find are the ones we all dream about adding to our life lists: Siberian Rubythroat, Common Cuckoo, Hawfinch, Common Rosefinch, Wood Sandpiper, and Siberian Flycatcher are just some of the possibilities. We'll take time to bird the tundra, too. Snow Buntings and Lapland Longspurs are common, but we'll search for McKay's Bunting, a species that occasionally breeds here in very small numbers. We found one on the 2006 tour. Some other birds we'll see during our stay include 'Eurasian' Green-winged Teal, Harlequin Duck, Rock Sandpiper, Red-necked Phalarope, and Gray-crowned Rosy-Finch.

After one more morning of birding, we'll go to the St. Paul Airport for our return to Anchorage.
