SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
28 September - 2 October 2008
Day Agenda
1
For those continuing the California Adventure or if you are joining us just for the extension, we will return for an additional attempt at California Gnatcatcher and bird a few parks in the Los Angeles Basin in search of migrants. We will then head south to San Diego, where we'll spend the night.

2
We'll begin the morning in Bolsa Chica for terns and shorebirds. This area is quite extensive and holds a diversity of species including southern herons such as Little Blue Heron and Tricolored Heron: rarities can show up at any time. We will depart mid-afternoon eastward toward the Salton Sea. Overnight in Brawley.

3
Our birding will begin early at the Salton Sea. It can be quite hot and very humid here, so we will bird in the morning, siesta in the afternoon, and then venture out again in the evening. We will search for Wood Stork, Fulvous Whistling-Duck, Gambel's Quail, Yellow-footed Gull, Inca Dove, Vermilion Flycatcher, Abert's Towhee, Cactus Wren, Black-tailed Gnatcatcher, Lucy's Warbler, Verdin, and possible rarities. In autumn 2006 there were several Blue-footed Boobies and California's first Ross's Gull at the Sea. Overnight in Brawley.

We will return to the same area to look for more great birds, with a mid-morning departure northward toward Banning. Our final afternoon and evening birding will be around Banning Park and Morongo Valley. Overnight in the area of Yucca Valley.
5
We will depart early for Los Angeles International Airport and your flights home.
